How the Face Lift Procedure Works

Skin starts to sag with age no matter how beautiful you were when younger. Sagging skin is caused by loosened elastic fiber and mimic muscle under the skin. Sagging skin is likened to worn out and misshapen clothes or underwear with loosened elastic. The more confidence patients had in their appearance, the more concerned they are about their sagging skin. When you lie down on a sofa and look at a mirror, your skin looks more smooth than usual. This is because your skin is pulled toward your ears by gravity.

Face Lift Surgery

In the past, surgeons cut and sew skin around the ears to perform the face lift surgery.
This procedure has some face lifting effect, but skin will sag again soon after the surgery.
At our clinic, muscle and fascia under the skin are pulled during the face lift procedure. This method ensures a lasting lifting effect and prevents the skin from reverting to the original condition. The face lift surgery performed at our clinic takes about 4 to 5 hours. The patient is put to sleep with the application of an intravenous anesthesia, and the doctor continues to stop bleeding and sew affected areas. Face lift surgery requires utmost care and attention of a cosmetic and plastic surgeon. To obtain optimal result from the surgery, bleeding needs to be stopped and the affected areas need to be sewn meticulously. Otherwise, blood will become congested and clogged blood will leave a scar. Some cosmetic surgery clinics advertise that their face lift surgery is finished in 2 hours, but this is a surgery that can never be completed in 2 or 3 hours.

Post Operative Course

The patient may go home after the face lift surgery with cotton gauze wrapped around the face. The patient’s hair is shampooed in the morning after the surgery. You will experience pain if you open your mouth wide for about one week after the surgery. Please don’t open your mouth wide when you eat. Take a painkiller to relieve the pain. Minor internal bleeding around the ear and neck might occur with some patients. You may wash your face and hair, take a shower and put on a makeup from the day after the surgery. You may take a bath from the day after the surgery, too. Swelling will usually disappear in a week to 10 days. You need to take at least one week off from work, but taking two weeks off is ideal.
